So Who Are We?
Preston Mountaineering Club was founded in 1933 by a group of lads from Preston and Blackburn who would cycle regularly to the Langdale and Coniston areas of the Lake District for a weekend on the rock. They were, as you might suspect, very keen climbers! We no longer expect you to cycle to a meet though....unless of course, you want to?!
Our Club has grown from these early days and now has a programme of climbing and mountaineering throughout the British Isles and abroad. With a membership encompassing a wide age range from 18 upwards, we like to ensure an informal and friendly club atmosphere and all are welcome.
Weekend meets
Our meets programme comprises regular weekend meets using climbing huts or campsites around the climbing and mountain areas of England, Scotland and Wales. On the meets, members enjoy taking part in the many different aspects of mountaineering: walking, scrambling, rock climbing and snow and ice climbing. We also have a mid-week rock climbing programme, which runs from Easter to September, covering many of the local quarries and crags within a 30/45 minute drive from Preston. Club members also organise summer and winter trips to the Alps.
Walking Meets
The Club also has two active walking groups that are mainly made up of the retired section of the club and those who can take a day off. The Mid-Week Walking Group meet on the third Thursday of the month for lower level walks in and around Lancashire, South Cumbria and West Yorkshire and always start with a café rendezvous. Walks tend to be around six miles in length and are not strenuous.
The Hill Walking group is a new monthly walking group and is in its third year now and meet on the first Thursday of the month. The walks cover the hills of Lancashire, Yorkshire and Lake District areas and tend to be between 7 to 10 miles in distance and cover more strenuous terrain.
We are currently looking to expand both walking groups so if you have time on your hands mid-week and love walking in our local countryside, come along and join us.
